The Kremlin didn’t even hide that they were betting on the pro-European Sandu losing the election. A considerable amount of money was allocated for this special operation, with even more information resources brought in. But in the end – a complete failure.
On Sunday, November 3, Moldova held the second round of its presidential election. The finalists were the current head of state, Maia Sandu, and Alexandr Stoianoglo, the former attorney general of the country, whom Sandu had scandalously removed from office in 2021.
In the first round, held two weeks earlier, Sandu, considered the favorite, received 42.5% of the votes. Almost 26% of Moldovans voted for her opponent.
After 99.68% of the ballots were processed, Maia Sandu held the lead, having received 55.35% of the vote. Alexandr Stoianoglo had 44.65% of support.
The Kremlin actively intervened in the course of the election, busing in voters and spreading fake news. But in the end, they still lost. It was almost laughable to watch as the state propaganda channels covered the election during the vote-counting stage.
On these channels, Alexandr Stoianoglo was consistently shown as the leader. And here’s a real gem from TASS:
“Stoianoglo won the presidential election on Moldovan territory with 51.19%, while Sandu received 48.81%. These preliminary results were published by the Central Election Commission after processing 100% of the protocols.
Taking into account the overseas polling stations, the votes were divided as follows: Sandu – 52.11%, Stoianoglo – 47.89%. Overall, 95.54% of protocols from abroad were processed.”
So, it turns out that Stoianoglo “won” when in reality he lost. Only a Russian propaganda agency could report a defeat as a victory. And all this nonsense was in one message from a state news agency, funded by the federal budget—that is, from the taxes of ordinary Russians.
Who this nonsense is intended for is unknown. But the local “deep believers” already rejoiced after reading the first line, having raised a glass to Russia’s “victory” in Moldova. And then they’ll continue arguing for some time about who actually won. We can reassure them: Sandu won, no question about it.
